DEMAND FOR 3D ANIMATORS CONTINUES TO RISE
SUNDAY, JUNE 03, 2007 SUNDAY LEISURE
The opening of SM Mall of Asia this year marked the entry of three-dimentional (3D) films into mainstream entertainment. The opening of SM Mall of Asia this year marked the entry of three-dimentional (3D) films into mainstream entertainment. Twenty minutes in Superman Returns were rendered in D, an amazing effect that requires special glasses for viewing. The hilarious Ant Bully likewise became larger-than-life when shown on the 73-foot-high Imax (Image Maximum) screen. Although 3D entertainment is more expensive to watch than regular films, more filipinos are lining up for 3D experience compared with conventional cinemas.
"3D is not a fad. Its superior visual and auditory impact is tremendous. The sense of reality and detail is unique," said First Academy of Computer Arts marketing communications consultant Lito Pagayon.
With the growing popularity of 3D cinemas in most parts of the world, more and more filmakers-including animation studios-are churning out 3D films to meet the demand of millions of viewers.
US animation studios are seen averaging 20 to 25 3D animated features a year. But cartoon or animatronics is no longer the exclusive turf of the Americans. The Chinese and Koreans-following the lead of the Japanese are also dabbling in animation, thus opening a wider door for talented Filipino artists who wants digital arts thier careers.
With an alternative career now opening up, knowledge and skills must be developed to become more marketable and competitive.

"We have been operating since 2001 and our graduates can attest to the quality of our programs and our professors,"said Pagayon.
With "3D Animation", students learn how inanimate objects come to life and how to produce their own demo reels. "The special skills they obtain from our course can be used to launch a career in entertainment, promotion and movie-making," Pagayon added.
3D animation graduates can expect to find employment as 3D artists, modelers, animators, renderers and special effect artists in the rapidly growing interactive media industry both here and abroad.
Among the First Academy graduates are Larsen Aniano, who was hired as an applications engineer by Autodesk, the world's leading supplier of advantaced 2D and 3D designs; Edwin Dela Torre, who worked on a special movie project for Road Runner post-production; and Peter Adviento, Sherwin Tan and Richard Pardo, all now full-fledged 3D artist-riggers and modelers for production studios specializing in 3D movies.
The Academy's training program is comprehensive and integrated as it adopts 3D digital animation not only for film and television but also for computer games and other forms of artworks.
